How can I tell if AI search is actually bringing customers to my business?

Short answer

You usually cannot measure AI search perfectly yet, but you can look for practical signs. Check website referrals, ask new enquiries how they found you, track calls and forms, and watch whether customers use phrases similar to AI-generated recommendations or summaries.

Explanation

AI search traffic can be difficult to separate from normal search, direct visits, maps listings, and word of mouth. Some AI tools may send visible website referrals, but many customer journeys will not show a clear source in analytics.

Instead, look for patterns across several places. Website analytics may show visits from AI tools or unusual referral sources. Contact forms, phone scripts, booking forms, and sales conversations can show whether people mention ChatGPT, Google AI answers, Perplexity, or "an AI search". Search Console may show changes in impressions or clicks for question-style searches.

AI may recommend a business because it detects repeated public information about services, locations, reviews, and customer outcomes. If more enquiries mention those same details, it may suggest that AI or AI-powered search is influencing how customers find and describe the business. Treat this as directional evidence, not an exact count.

Example

A local kitchen fitter adds a required "How did you hear about us?" field to its enquiry form, with options for Google, Google Maps, ChatGPT or another AI tool, recommendation, and other. Over two months, several enquiries mention "AI search" and ask about fitted kitchens in a specific town. The owner also sees referral visits from Perplexity and more question-based impressions in Search Console. None of this proves every lead came from AI, but it shows AI search may be part of the discovery journey.

Takeaway

AI search leads are often easier to identify through repeated clues than through one perfect report. Combine analytics, customer questions, call notes, and form responses to understand whether AI tools may be influencing how people discover your business.
