Why Does My Business Appear on Google but Not in AI Answers?

Short answer
Appearing on Google search results does not automatically mean your business will appear in AI-generated answers.
Explanation
Traditional search engines display lists of websites that match a query. Users then click through to explore the options themselves.
AI assistants work differently. Instead of listing websites, they generate a single answer based on patterns they learned from many sources. This means AI systems focus more on identifying businesses that strongly match the question being asked.
You can use many well-known Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) techniques to rank high in search engine results for certain keywords. However if your website does not clearly communicate the specific problem your business solves, AI may not recognise it as a strong candidate for recommendation.
Example
A coffee shop in Manchester city centre might rank on Google for “coffee shop in Manchester city centre”.
But if someone asks an AI assistant:
“Where can I find coffee shop serving authentic Colombian brew near Manchester city centre?”
The AI may choose coffee shops that are clearly associated with Colombian brew.
Takeaway
Ranking on Google and appearing in AI answers are related but not identical. AI assistants look for clear connections between a business and the problem being asked.
