How will Google AI Overviews change how customers find local businesses?

Short answer

Google AI Overviews move some local discovery from browsing search results to reading a summarised answer. Customers increasingly compare businesses through AI-generated summaries, follow-up questions, and AI Mode, using information from business profiles, reviews, service pages, locations, and other trusted online sources.

Explanation

Google AI Overviews change local discovery by answering more of the customer's question before they click anything. Instead of only showing a list of websites or map results, Google can summarise which businesses seem relevant and why.

For a local business, visibility depends on whether Google can connect the business to a clear service, place, and customer need. It reads signals from places such as Google Business Profile, reviews, website service pages, local directories, and other public sources. If these sources repeat the same facts, Google can interpret the business more clearly.

Being near the top of traditional search results does not guarantee that a business will be cited in an AI Overview. AI summaries can select, combine, or skip sources depending on what best answers the search. Google AI Mode also lets people ask follow-up questions, so discovery becomes more conversational. A customer can start with "best accountant near me", then ask "which one helps landlords?" or "which has evening appointments?" without starting again.

This does not mean traditional local SEO disappears. Google Business Profile, reviews, useful service pages, accurate contact details, and local relevance still matter. The difference is that the customer can make a decision inside an AI-led search journey before visiting several websites.

Example

A customer searches for "emergency plumber near me who can fix leaking pipes tonight". Google can show an AI Overview that summarises nearby options, service types, opening hours, review themes, and location fit. The customer may then ask a follow-up question such as "which one covers South London?" A plumber with clear emergency plumbing services, current opening hours, recent reviews mentioning leaks, and matching details across its website and Google Business Profile is easier for Google to connect to that request.

Takeaway

Google AI Overviews make local discovery more answer-led and conversational. Small businesses should make their services, locations, opening hours, reviews, and customer outcomes clear across their main online profiles so AI-powered search can interpret them accurately.
